Fare Evasion Detection in Buses

Tackling the Growing Challenge of Fare Evasion

Fare Evasion: A Critical Challenge in Bus Networks

Fare evasion is a widespread issue that threatens the financial sustainability of public transport networks. Detecting and monitoring fare evasion in bus networks is particularly challenging. While some operators attempt to estimate fare evasion by comparing ticket validations to data from Automatic Passenger Counting (APC) systems, this approach usually results in a general overview rather than accurate, actionable data.

Our Approach: AI-Powered Fare Evasion Detection for Buses

Our solution goes one step further. Using AI-driven video analytics, our technology detects fare evasion cases in real-time and on an individual basis. This enables ticket inspectors to prioritize buses depending on the real fare evasion load at any given time, maximizing inspection impact while minimizing inconvenience to passengers.

Unlike traditional random inspections, which can slow down service and degrade the passenger experience, our technology keeps operations running smoothly while detecting fare evasion more effectively and precisely.

Maximize Operational Impact

Target buses with higher fare evasion, reduce unnecessary checks and maximize the impact of your inspection team

Improve Passenger Satisfaction

Use focused, data-driven inspections to minimize inconveniences to paying passengers.

Protect Revenue

Safeguard revenue by increasing the deterring effect of your fare enforcement team and onboard camera systems.

Features

Real-Time Detection

Identify fare evasion events as they happen, using onboard AI-powered video analytics.

Instant Mobile Alerts

Through the inspector mobile app, get immediate notifications with visual evidence of alleged fare evaders

Targeted Inspections

Allows inspectors to focus their efforts on buses with higher fare evasion, reducing unnecessary checks.

How It Works

1. AI-Powered Fare Evasion Detection

  • Our system analyses video streams from bus surveillance cameras in real-time.
  • Currently, this processing is done on a small onboard computer, with plans to execute it directly on the camera.

  • Inspectors receive real-time alerts via mobile app, enabling them to prioritize buses with high fare evasion count.
  • Optional visual assistance provides images or video clips of alleged fare evaders, allowing inspectors to focus only on them.

  • A web-based dashboard lets transit authorities monitor fare evasion trends and inspector activities. Detailed statistics by route, stop, and time of day support better strategic planning.

2. Real-Time Alerts & Strategic Inspections

3. Comprehensive Data & Analytics

Proven Success in Dubai: over 90% Accuracy in Fare Evasion Detection

During a three-month Proof of Concept in Dubai, conducted in collaboration with the RTA and CISCO, and under CISCO’s Country Digital Acceleration Program, our technology achieved over 90% accuracy in identifying fare evasion. Transit officers commended the solution for its user-friendliness and its significant potential to enhance fare enforcement on urban buses. While Time-of-Flight sensors were used in Dubai, AWAAIT is now conducting additional trials in another city, leveraging standard video cameras to offer a more cost-effective alternative.
